What to do when your business is struggling. As the seasons change, so does the flow of money coming into your business. Your income may go up but for most small businesses, such as scrap metal recyclers, the fall and winter months of the year typically provide less metal to recycle.

From one scrapper to another, knowing what to do when your business is struggling should be at the top of your business plan right along with your desire to make money.



As a business owner, your sole focus can not only be about success because you do not obtain success without failure.

Failure happens because you either ignore the details or ignore the possibility of failure happening.

Avoiding failure is as simple as having a plan in place that allows you to recover/win in the event failure happens.

Once fall and winter arrives the habits of many people change. The amount of scrap metal and copper on the curbside appears to be lighter as well.

In some places around the city, there is literally nothing at all.

These handful of months are when I see tons of new scrap metal collectors park their trucks until the spring.

What you do not realize is there is still a constant, steady flow of scrap metal and copper. People shift into holiday mode from October until January 2nd.

This does not mean that they run out of scrap metal to set outside. It means they run out of spare time and metal or copper items that they would normally set out, are put into the garage or shoved into a corner.



This time of the year is not only the biggest for shopping; it is also the biggest cleanout time of the year.

When people get new televisions, washers, dryers, stoves, bikes, fridge’s, pots, pans and so forth, you always see the box outside but you never see the old item.

This is because during colder months rather than being worried about the item getting picked up, for most people it is easier to just move the item out to the garage and worry about it when spring comes.

What I want to share with you today is a way to remain constantly busy during what many scrappers believe is the slow time of the year for copper and other metals.

You have to flat out shift gears for the holidays as well. The months that I mentioned earlier are also the biggest mailing months.

From cards to sales papers, people focus more on the contents of their mailbox during these months.

This is the perfect time for you to make your scrap metal business known to people.

Design a flier and get some business cards printed. Leave the fliers or cards in places that have a constant flow of people from all over the area where you live.

One of the most effective techniques that I use during this time of the year is direct mail marketing.

It is basically that bundle of sales papers that your mail person crams into your mailbox.
